Frequently Asked Questions
Welcome to the Plegium FAQ. Here, you'll find answers on how our app works, details about the pepper spray and emergency button features, and everything you need to know about the subscriptions.
Do I need a subscription to use my Plegium device?
Yes. Starting April 1, 2026, we are moving to a subscription-based model. That means our smart features will only be available through Plegium Plus or Plegium Premium. Features that don't include the app (spray, siren, strobe light) will continue to function without a subscription.
Customers who purchased and registered a device before March 31, 2026—and who have not previously subscribed—will be eligible for a free one-year Plegium Plus subscription. Eligible users will receive this offer starting April 1, 2026.
If you have any questions or need assistance, contact us at contact@plegium.com and include your full name, email, phone number (with country code), and date of purchase or a copy of your receipt.
What is included in the Plegium Plus subscription?
The Plegium Plus subscription includes:
- Emergency alerts via phone calls to your emergency contacts.
- Emergency alerts via SMS to your emergency contacts. The SMS includes a link to a tracking page where your emergency contacts can see your location and follow your movement live on a map.
- The tracking page also includes a live audio stream. The audio is also recorded and saved, and can later be used in an investigation or as evidence.
- You can add up to 7 emergency contacts in the Plegium app.
- A virtual alarm button in the Plegium app that, when pressed, sends out the emergency alerts. This allows you to send alerts without activating your spray or emergency button (in some situations you may want to alert discreetly).
- A live-updated alarm log showing which of your emergency contacts have received the alert.
What additional features does Plegium Premium offer?
With Plegium Premium, you get all features included in Plegium Plus, plus a connection to a 24/7 monitoring desk - so you can get help at any time, even if your emergency contacts miss the alerts.
The monitoring desk will try to call you back to verify whether the alarm is real. If they can’t reach you or otherwise confirm you’re safe, they will follow their procedures to dispatch help (police and/or security personnel).
How does the monitoring desk connection work with Plegium Premium?
When you activate your smart defense spray or alarm button, your emergency alerts are also sent directly to a monitoring desk, which in turn contacts the police about your situation and location.
This service is included in your Plegium Premium subscription at no extra cost.
How much does the Plegium Plus subscription cost?
Plegium Plus costs $4.99/month, and you can try the service for free for 7 days. You can cancel at any time. You can also choose an annual subscription for $49.99/year.
How much does the Plegium Premium subscription cost?
Plegium Premium costs $9.99/month, and you can try the service for free for 7 days. You can cancel at any time. You can also choose an annual subscription for $99.99/year.
How do I subscribe to Plegium Plus or Plegium Premium?
Plegium Plus and Plegium Premium can be purchased directly in the Plegium app. You can choose a monthly or annual subscription.
Both Plus and Premium are available with a free 7 day trial, and you can cancel at any time. The subscription renews automatically unless it’s canceled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period.
How do I cancel my Plus or Premium subscription?

How do I set up my Plegium pepper spray with my phone?
Setting up your Plegium Smart Pepper Spray or your Plegium Smart Mini Pepper Spray with your phone is a quick and easy process. Here's how to do it:
- Download the Plegium app from the App Store or Google Play. Create an account and follow the setup instructions in the app. Make sure to grant the app permission to use Bluetooth and location services.

- Connect your spray to the app by tapping "Add device" on the home screen, and finding your device in the list. You can also add your device by going to Settings > "Add Device From Code" and then entering the four-digit code found under the flip top safety lid.
- Add emergency contacts by clicking "Add contact" in the app and selecting up to 7 contacts from your phone's contact list. Your spray is now connected to your phone and ready to use.
To test all functions except the spray, use a pointed object to slide down the test switch on the side of the product for 10 seconds, then slide it back up. This will activate all features and send out alarms to your emergency contacts (so remember to let them know you are testing it).
Keep in mind that the Plegium app must be open for the location text messages and phone calls to function, it's enough that the app is in the background and the phone can be locked, but if you actively close ("kill") the app it will not be able to receive the signal from your spray that it has been fired.

Keep in mind that for the emergency alerts to function, the Plegium app must be open or running in the background, otherwise it will not be able to receive the signal from the button when it's activated.
Does the Plegium app work on both Android and iOS?
Yes, the Plegium app is compatible with both Android and iOS devices. You can download the app on the App Store or Google Play.
How long does my Plegium pepper spray last?
All Plegium pepper sprays have a long shelf life, but we recommend replacing your spray every two years.
If you’re unsure, you can test the siren, LED light and emergency alerts without deploying the spray itself (it’s important to save the spray liquid in case of a real emergency).
There is a test lever on the side of the spray. Use a pointed object to push the lever down for 10 seconds, then push it back up.
Remember to inform your emergency contacts in advance so they know it’s only a test.
How long does my Plegium Smart Emergency Button last?
The battery life of the Plegium Smart Emergency Button is about two years. Storing the device in cold environments can reduce battery life.
You can see the device’s connection status in the Plegium app. If the device won’t connect to the app, the battery is most likely empty.
If you make a test alarm and the green LED on the device does not blink, the battery is most likely empty.
You can replace the battery by opening the back of the device with a small screwdriver. The device uses a CR2032 battery, which is widely available and inexpensive.
How do I test my Plegium pepper spray?
You can test the siren, LED light and emergency alerts on your pepper spray without deploying the spray itself (it’s important to save the spray liquid in case of a real emergency).
There is a test lever on the side of your spray. Use a pointed object to push the lever down for 10 seconds, then push it back up.
If you have a Smart or Smart Mini, remember to inform your emergency contacts in advance so they know it’s only a test.
How many emergency contacts can I have?
You can add up to 7 emergency contacts.
If you have a Premium subscription, the emergency alert is also sent to a monitoring desk in addition to your emergency contacts.
Do my emergency contacts need to download the Plegium app?
No. Your emergency contacts do not need to download the app to receive alerts from you. Alerts are sent automatically as phone calls and SMS directly to their phones.
You only need to add your emergency contacts’ mobile phone numbers in the Plegium app.
What will the emergency alerts look like when I trigger my Plegium device?
When you activate your connected Plegium device (Plegium Smart Defense Spray, Plegium Smart Mini Defense Spray, or the Plegium Smart Emergency Button), your emergency contacts immediately receive a phone call with an automated voice message saying you have triggered an alarm and are in danger.
At the same time, they also receive an SMS with a link to a tracking page (opened in a browser) where they can follow your location live and listen to audio from the person in distress’s phone. The audio stream is saved and can later be used for investigation and evidence purposes.

With Premium, the emergency alerts are also sent to a monitoring desk.
Which phone number will my emergency contacts receive alerts from when I activate my Plegium device?
Emergency alerts will come from (312) 626-5076 for phone calls and (478) 288-8999 for text messages.
To ensure easy identification, we recommend asking your emergency contacts to add these numbers as contacts in their phones.
How do I use my pepper spray?
Here’s how to deploy your pepper spray most effectively:
- Hold the spray in one hand and slide up the safety cap with your thumb.
- Press firmly with your thumb in the center of the trigger. When you do, all functions activate at the same time.
- Aim at the attacker’s eyes, then at the nose and mouth.
Please note that even after you release the trigger, the siren and light will continue to sound and flash until you turn them off by using a pointed object to push up the test lever on the side of the spray. This is a safety feature to prevent an attacker from turning off the siren and light.
How do I activate my Plegium Smart Emergency Button?
To trigger the alarm, press and hold both side buttons for 2 seconds. A green light on the button will blink to indicate the alarm has been activated.
Once activated, your emergency contacts immediately receive a phone call with an automated voice message saying you have triggered an alarm and are in danger.
At the same time, they also receive an SMS with a link to a tracking page (opened in a browser) where they can follow your location live and listen to audio from your phone. The audio stream is saved and can later be used for investigation and evidence purposes.
The alarm button must be connected to your phone via Bluetooth for the alarm to be triggered.
How long can I spray with my pepper spray?
All Plegium pepper sprays provide 10–15 seconds of continuous spraying, which is enough time to aim and spray multiple attackers in the same situation.
Does the Plegium app need to be open for the emergency alerts to work?
Yes and no—the Plegium app must be open to maintain the Bluetooth connection to your device and therefore be able to send emergency alerts when you activate it, but the app can run in the background and your phone can be locked. If the app is completely closed, it won’t be able to receive the activation signal from your spray or alarm button.
On iOS, the Plegium app needs permission to run in the background. Enable this by going to Settings → Apps → Plegium → Background App Refresh → On.
On Android, change the following setting: Settings → Apps → Plegium → Battery → set to “No restrictions” / “Unrestricted”.
The spray/alarm button reconnects automatically when the app is opened again, as long as it’s within Bluetooth range of your phone. You can check the connection status in the app at any time.
Does my spray or alarm button need to stay connected to my phone for the emergency alerts to work?
Yes. For the emergency alerts to be sent, your Plegium device must maintain a Bluetooth connection to your phone (which requires it to be within about 2–3 meters), and the Plegium app must be open. If you fully close the app, the device will disconnect and the app won’t detect when you activate the device—meaning no emergency alerts will be sent. The device reconnects automatically when you open the app again or move it back within Bluetooth range. You can always check the connection status in the Plegium app.
Note that the app only controls the emergency alert features. If your spray is not connected to your phone and therefore cannot send emergency alerts, the spray’s other functions—such as the spray, LED light, and siren—are not affected and will still work as normal.
Can I refill my Plegium pepper spray?
No. The canisters inside our sprays are built-in and glued in place to ensure customer safety. We therefore recommend getting a new defense spray if you have used yours.
Please remember that we offer a replacement guarantee in cases where a customer needs to use one of our sprays in a real emergency. If you had to use your spray, send us a copy of the police report and we will send you a new defense spray.
Can I reuse my Plegium pepper spray after using it?
Each spray contains 13 ml of spray liquid, which allows for up to 10–15 seconds of continuous spraying. You can of course continue spraying as long as the canister isn’t empty, but for safety reasons we recommend replacing your spray after use to ensure you have a full spray ready in case of an emergency.
Please note that we offer a unique guarantee on all our sprays: If you need to use your Plegium defense spray in a real emergency that results in a police report, we will replace it for free. Just send us the report and we’ll send you a new spray.
Can I bring my Plegium pepper spray when traveling abroad?
Laws and regulations for pepper sprays vary between countries. We therefore recommend checking the local laws for your destination. Some countries allow pepper spray, others allow menthol-based sprays, and some only allow marking sprays.
Our sprays are classified as aerosols and are therefore not allowed in the cabin on an airplane.
How far does my Plegium pepper spray reach?
All Plegium pepper sprays have a range of at least 10 feet (3 meters).
You can read more about our pepper sprays here.
Can I order pepper spray to my state?
We deliver pepper spray to all states except Alaska, Washington DC, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New York, and Wisconsin due to local regulations regarding pepper spray. However, our emergency buttons are available for delivery to all states.
Why can't I buy Plegium pepper spray online in New York? (and some other states)
While pepper spray is legal in all 50 states for self-defense purposes, some states have additional restrictions on buying pepper spray online. Fortunately all Plegium Pepper Sprays have the canister sizes and content amount that fits every state in that regards (slightly less than 1/2 oz, 13 ml) - but there's a few states that completely ban online ordering and shipping of pepper spray - those are: New York, Massachussets, Alaska, Hawaii and Washington D.C. In addition Wisconsin don't allow UV Dye in a pepper spray, which our feature-packed Smart Pepper Sprays contain as well.
Best course of action if you're in one of those states is to make way to your local pharmacy or firearms dealer and ask if they carry Plegium products!
How should I store my pepper spray?
What should I do if I accidentally spray myself or someone else?
What is the spray pattern of my Plegium pepper spray?
The Plegium pepper spray features a "stream" spray pattern, which has a good balance between range (reaching up to 15 feet) and accuracy (compared to a cone spray pattern), with low risk of blow-back compared to a gel spray pattern.
You can read more about our pepper spray and it's spray pattern in our pepper spray guide.
